EGYPT

A holiday in Egypt will see you visit a land that is as mystical as the tales of the ancient gods that once ruled here. Unleash your inner Indiana Jones or let your Lara Croft loose and explore the dusty ruins and towering pyramids set between the towering dunes of the desert. Alternatively, the coastline is peppered with salt-colored beaches and cooled by the calm waters of the Red Sea, if you prefer the sand to be closer to the sea.

Egypt, a country that connects northeast Africa to the Middle East, dates from the pharaohs’ period. Millennia-old monuments are located along the fertile Nile River Valley, including Giza ‘s colossal pyramids and Great Sphinx, as well as Luxor’s hieroglyphic Karnak Temple and Kings Tomb Valley. Ottoman landmarks, such as the Muhammad Ali Mosque and the Egyptian Museum, a trove of antiques, are located in the capital, Cairo.

Egypt’s official currency is the Egyptian £(EGP). The symbol used for the EGP is either E£ or in Arabic (among other things. The Egyptian Pound is split into smaller denominations known as qirsh or millimes in currency.

In Egypt, what is the currency?
Egypt’s currency is the Egyptian Pound (LE), which is divided into 100 Piastres. Banknotes are issued in denominations 5, 10, 20, 50, 100 and 200.

It is possible to swap pounds of sterling, US dollars, euros and other major currencies in Egypt. Exchange services are available at different offices and there are ATMs in all major cities. Check OANDA for the latest currencies. Requesting bank notes in smaller denominations is advisable, since it can often be difficult to get change from big notes and smaller notes are useful for smaller transactions and gratuities.

Requesting bank notes in smaller denominations is advisable, since it can often be difficult to get change from big notes and smaller notes are useful for smaller transactions and gratuities. In government-run shops, most hotels, and Red Sea resorts, credit and debit cards are commonly accepted.
Traveler’s checks are not recommended because they are always hard to swap and incur high fees.

In Egypt, is it healthy to drink tap water?

Tap water in Egypt is technically safe to drink, but we do not recommend that you do as it causes intestinal upsets as it is heavily chlorinated. Mineral bottled water is readily accessible from low-cost hotels , restaurants, and stores. For brushing your teeth and showering, the tap water in Egypt is perfect.

Like what is the food in Egypt?
Egyptian cuisine has plenty to appeal to most eaters with succulent grilled meats, fish and vegetables, although it is worth taking a few precautions to prevent stomach issues while on vacation. Since tap water is heavily chlorinated, except for dining in upmarket restaurants , hotels and cruise vessels, it is best to avoid salads. Any food you eat should be piping hot to ensure it’s fully cooked-avoid food that looks like it’s been sitting around for some time. A few weeks before and after your vacation, consider taking a probiotic to establish your own natural protection against bugs that may come into contact with your stomach.

Egyptian cuisine is no different from Turkish, Jordanian and other Middle Eastern cuisines. Fuul medames (fava beans often served with vegetables and boiled eggs) and ta’amiyya (chickpea patties) are the basic basic staples of pulses, while visitors to Egypt are more likely to experience a delicious array of meats accompanied by salads, rice, seasoned vegetables, and mezzes. Other common dishes are houmous and other yoghurt-based dips, coupled with fresh pitta, schwarma (similar to a Turkish doner kebab), kofta (a spiced meat dish skewered) and fiteer (a kind of pizza).

Kosheri, which is a fascinating but tasty combination of noodles, rice, lentils, fried onion and spicy sauce, has to be the lunchtime bargain. It’s very tasty and incredibly inexpensive. Bread is a staple of Egyptian cuisine and with every meal you will be given a choice of some kind. Vegetarians in Egypt can find plenty of options with stuffed peppers, grilled aubergine and common meat-free dishes baked with squash.

As well as fresh berries, exotic juices freshly squeezed from the fruits of mango, guava and other seasonal varieties are also widely available. As Egypt is a predominately Islamic country, alcohol is not readily available.

Is Tipping in Egypt standard?
The word ‘backsheesh’ can refer to a tip or a bribe, and as tipping is a normal part of everyday life, it is a word you are likely to hear while travelling around Egypt. Anyone who has given a service, from the ordinary, waiters and drivers, to the less anticipated, from security guards at certain tourist sites, would likely have a tip requested from you. As a reference, it is common to tip restaurant staff with 10 percent of the bill (assuming that a service fee has not already been applied to the restaurant and not the waiter),

To be shared between the on-board crew, taxi drivers are about $1 and cruise workers are $4-5 a day. Fold the notes in your hands while delivering your backsheesh, and pass the cash in the shape of a handshake.
With a nominal pre-determined sum collected from all tour participants on the morning of day 2 in local currency, our Tipping Made Simple policy takes the hassle out of tipping while on tour. This tipping kitty is subsequently divided among bellhops, luggage handlers, local guides and other support staff who assist the tour. For your convenience, the sums received for tips per person are as set out in your Tour Trip Notes:

Please notice that a tip to your group tour leader does not include our Tipping Made Easy amount, where we recommend an amount of USD $3-$6 per day of your tour. However, naturally, the number is up to you. If you are going on a group tour of fewer than 6 participants or on a tailor-made holiday, we recommend that the following sums per person per day be allocated to cover tips charged directly to bellhops, luggage handlers, the driver and local guides instead of Tipping Made Easy: USD $10 if the day includes a local guide and sightseeing and USD $5 if the day does not include a guide or sightseeing.

Is negotiation popular in Egypt?
Trading and haggling over costs is an important part of shopping in Egypt’s markets and bazaars. Vendors will also greatly inflate their costs so that a final price is settled on that matches all parties after a back-and-forth exchange of numbers. The trick is to go low and work your way up but keep in mind a maximum amount at all times. It’s a good idea to suss out prices in the fixed-price souvenir shops that often accompany many of the famous tourist sites so you know what items you can pay for.

What to Buy in Egypt
Egypt is Aladdin ‘s virtual Cave. While the Khan al-Khalili bazaar in Cairo is cavernous and full of unique and daily items, smaller souks and bazaars abound in other cities as well. Top purchases include cotton tops, brass wear, leather wear, mosaic lamps and mirrors, backgammon sticks, hand-made sheesha pipes, marble and alabaster Pharaonic artefacts, sheets of Egyptian cotton, garments and, of course, genuine papyrus.

Is Visiting Egypt as a Solo Woman safe?
In Egypt, the cultural mindset towards women is different from that of the West, so travelling as a single woman requires consideration to ensure a more enjoyable travel experience. Dressing conservatively at all times is the safest way to prevent unwanted scrutiny, and this means keeping the shoulders and upper arms, legs and chest covered with loose-fitting and opaque clothes.

The hot Egyptian sun could tempt you to do the complete opposite in order to perfect your tan, but if you make an effort to dress more properly, you will show respect for the local culture. The Egyptian workers are more familiar with Western culture in the Red Sea resorts and thus a more casual approach to clothing is usually not an issue.

It’s advisable to stop walking the streets of downtown Cairo at night, like any big city anywhere in the world. If you receive any undesirable publicity, it is best to seem standoffish as any kind of friendliness can be misconstrued. By no way is Egypt a dangerous place for female tourists-Egyptians are hospitable, polite and humorous people and are likely to leave their country with a permanent, positive experience. However, in order to make the most of your time in this amazing country, it is fair to be careful and respectful of the local customs.

Is Egypt an apt holiday destination for families?
Definitely! The amazing pyramids, temples and tombs are bound to fascinate young and old alike with their intricate history and impressive craftsmanship and children will come away from a holiday to Egypt with their minds opened and stimulated with imagination. From camel rides to felucca boat trips on the Nile, Egypt also provides a range of thrilling activities, so it’s unlikely they’ll ever be bored.

There are plenty of family-friendly resorts along the Red Sea with dedicated play areas for children, swimming pools and games so that parents can relax while the children are entertained and cared for.
